A Reader's Guide to Bulgaria

Language Guides

A basic textbook for learning Bulgarian is Mila Hubenova, Ana Dzhumadanova, and Milka Marinova, A Course in Modern Bulgarian, 2 parts (Columbus, OH: Slavica, 1983), which is a translation of a Bulgarian text published in 1964. A recent addition is Michael Holman and Mira Kovatcheva, Teach Yourself Bulgarian: Book and Cassette Pack (London: Hodder & Stoughton Ltd., 1993.

There are two shorter phrase books available: M. Alexieva and E. Paunova, Conversation English-Bulgarian (Sofia: Nauka i izkustvo, 1987) and Maria and Vladimir Filipov Bulgarian-English Phrasebook (Sofia: Nauka i izkustvo, 1982).

Bulgarian-English and English-Bulgarian dictionaries have traditionally been hard to find. The standards have been Teodora Atanasova et al. Bulgarian-English Dictionary, 2vols, and its counterpart Maria Rankova et al. English-Bulgarian Dictionary, 2 vols. Both works published in Sofia by Nauka i izkustvo in 1990.
