Bulgaria wrecked by severe winter weather

According to Associated Press and Reuters reports, severe winter weather front lashed at Bulgaria among other Central and East European states this week. The situation in Bulgaria was exacerbated by the lack of funds to provide sufficient heating in public buildings, clear roads and railways. Bulgaria's state-run BTA news agency was quoted about the death of four people in a psychiatric clinic in Radnevo, 150 miles east of Sofia, because of a lack of heat. One of the patients reportedly jumped out of the window shouting, "I'm dying of cold!".

The Bulgarian president-elect Petar Stoyanov had to make an unexpected visit to Bucharest after the three major airports in Bulgaria -- in Sofia, Burgas and Varna -- were closed.
