Opposition candidate wins decisively the Bulgarian presidential elections

Early projections of the outcome of the presidential poll in Bulgaria give the opposition candidate Petar Stoyanov, 44, the win over his rival from the largely ex-communist Bulgarian Socialist Party by about a 60 % to 40 % margin. The turnout at about 60 % was slightly lower than at the first round a week ago. The first official numbers are expected on Monday and the final vote count will be completed by Wednesday.

In his first statements after the election, Mr. Stoyanov pledged to work on bringing Bulgaria closer to EU and NATO. When commenting on domestic issues Mr. Stoyanov reportedly refrained from a direct criticism of the BSP government. He suggested that a National Salvation Council of experts and respected public figures be formed with a purpose of advising the government.

The prime minister Videnov reportedly called Mr. Stoyanov's win "impressive" and congratulated him. Mr. Videnov suggested that policy changes and cabinet reshuffles are possible in the coming months as a result of the defeat of his party in the elections.
